What’s Really Causing Your Acne?

Whats_Causing_Acne_OurFlipSideLife

Studies show that 54% of women report having some type of acne. But not all acne can be blamed on hormone imbalance. Food sensitivities, the amount of healthy fat in your diet, and the overuse of acne treatments can play a big factor in what’s causing acne.

Use these tips to approach acne treatments differently and get long-lasting results.

1. Check for food sensitivities – Even if you don’t have digestive issues, stubborn acne can be an indicator that you’re eating something you’re sensitive to.
2. Add more healthy fats to your diet – the idea that healthy fats and oils promote acne is old science. In fact, essential fatty acids like omega-3s help produce the skin’s natural oil barrier, keep skin hydrated, and reduces inflammation.
3. Eliminate sugar from your diet – too much sugar overfeeds the “bad” bacteria in your gut, contributing to an imbalanced ecosystem in your gastrointestinal tract.
4. Eat foods rich in Vitamin A1 and Zinc – Vitamin A1, also known as retinol, is found in animal-sourced foods, such as salmon, mackerel, tuna, liver, and grass-fed butter. Foods rich in Zinc include nuts, seeds, legumes, etc.
5. Cut back on the number of face products you’re using – topical treatments for breakouts don’t tend to work long-term because the inflammatory root of the acne is usually coming from the inside, not outside, of the body. Stick to clean, non-toxic products, and keep your regime simple.

If you’re looking to switch to non-toxic beauty products to help improve the appearance of your skin I recommend using Beauty Counter Products. Products like the Purifying Charcoal Mask, Overnight Resurfacing Peel, and the Countertime Collection (but careful with the oil cleanser if treating hyperpigmentation) are great and have worked wonders on my skin.
