The holidays are here which means food is in abundance and if we aren’t careful we can find ourselves overindulging and sabotaging all the hard work you’ve put into improving your health.

Here are some tips to help you stay focused on your health and wellness goals this holiday season plus a delicious side dish recipe to help round out the holiday table.

Tips to help you get through the Holidays

Tip#1: Eat with purpose. At least half of your plate should include greens and other nutrient rich foods that nourish the body, increase energy and keep you full longer.

Tip# 2 – Beware of the Food Police. Friends and family that overstep boundaries and try imposing their dietary rules on you. Our food choices are unique to our individual needs – what works for you doesn’t necessarily work for someone else.

Tip#3: Make exercise a priority. Spend 20-30min moving the body to increase the heart rate, reduce stress and support the immune system.

Tip#4: Stay hydrated. Water accounts for 60% of your body’s total weight and we need to stay hydrated in order to maintain this ratio. Also, if you’re consuming alcoholic beverages over the holidays, try alternating with glasses of water in between your cocktails. This will help with unwanted weight gain and hangovers.

 

Roasted Delicata Squash with Cilantro Chimichurri

 

To make the Roasted Delicata Squash:

Ingredients

6 pounds delicata squash

2 tablespoon olive oil

Salt and pepper to taste

 

To make the Cilantro Chimichurri

Ingredients

1/2 cup olive oil

1/2 cup cilantro, chopped

1/2 cup parsley, chopped

1 1/2 tsp chili flakes

1/4 tsp salt (I like to use Redmonds Real Salt Use promo code OurFlipSideLife for 15% off your order)

4 garlic cloves, minced

1/4 cup apple cider vinegar

 

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 375F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Cut the squash in half lengthwise. Scoop out and discard the seeds then cut the squash into 1-inch slices.
  3. Toss the squash with olive oil, salt, pepper and place on the prepared baking sheet.
  4. Roast the squash for 30 minutes or until tender.
  5. While the squash is roasting prepare the chimichurri. Add all the ingredients into a blender and blend on high until well combined. Taste and add more salt if needed.
  6. Transfer the roasted squash to a serving platter and top with a generous amount of chimichurri and enjoy.

La temporada de fiestas a llegado, lo que significa que la actividades que se celebran alrededor de la comida abundan , si no tenemos cuidado, podemos terminar  comiendo mas de lo normal o debido y saboteando todo lo que hemos hecho durante el año para para mejorar su salud.

Aquí les dejo unos consejitos para ayudarlo a mantenerse enfocado en nuestros objetivos de salud y bienestar esta temporada de fiestas, además de una deliciosa receta para completar su mesa.

Consejo#1: Come con propósito. Al menos la mitad del plato debe incluir verduras y otros alimentos ricos en nutrientes que nutran el cuerpo, aumenten la energía y lo mantengan satisfecho por más tiempo.

Consejo#2: Tenga cuidado con los amigos y familiares que intentan imponerle sus hábitos  dietéticos. Nuestras elecciones de alimentos responden exclusivamente a nuestras necesidades individuales; lo que funciona para ti no necesariamente funciona para otra persona.

Consejo#3: Haga del ejercicio una prioridad. Dedique 20-30 minutos a mover el cuerpo para aumentar el ritmo cardíaco, reducir el estrés y fortalezer el sistema inmunológico.

Consejo # 4: Manténgase hidratado. El agua representa el 60% del peso total de su cuerpo y necesitamos mantenernos hidratados para mantener esta proporción. Además, si consume bebidas alcohólicas, intente alternarlas con vasos de agua. Esto ayudará con el aumento de peso y la resaca.

 

Calabaza Delicata Asada con Chimichurri de Cilantro

Para hacer la calabaza Delicata asada:

Ingredientes

6 libras de calabaza delicata

2 cucharadas de aceite de oliva

Sal y pimienta para probar

 

Para hacer el Chimichurri de Cilantro

Ingredientes

1/2 taza de aceite de oliva

1/2 taza de cilantro picado

1/2 taza de perejil picado

1 1/2 cucharadita de hojuelas de chile

1/4 cucharadita de sal

4 dientes de ajo picados

1/4 taza de vinagre de sidra de manzana

 

Instrucciones:

  1. Precaliente el horno a 375F. Cubra una bandeja para hornear con papel pergamino.
  2. Cortar la calabaza por la mitad a lo largo. Saque y deseche las semillas, luego corte la calabaza en rodajas de 1 pulgada.
  3. Mezcle la calabaza con aceite de oliva, sal, pimienta y colóquela en la bandeja para hornear.
  4. Ase la calabaza durante 30 minutos o hasta que esté tierna.
  5. Mientras la calabaza se asa, prepare el chimichurri. Agregue todos los ingredientes en una licuadora y mezcle en alto hasta que estén bien combinados. Pruebe y añada más sal si la necesita.
  6. Transfiera la calabaza asada a una fuente y cubra con una generosa cantidad de chimichurri y disfrute.
