Could Nightshades Be Causing Your Inflammation?

Nightshades

If you’ve stopped consuming gluten and dairy (the two most inflammatory foods) and are still experiencing gas, diarrhea, bloating and joint pain, nightshades could be the issue.

Nightshades are a botanical family of plants, more technically called Solanaceae. These include; tomatoes, tomatillos, bell peppers, eggplant, white potatoes, chili, peppers, cayenne pepper, paprika, goji berries.

Nightshades can be a problem for some due to their lectin, saponin and/or capsaicin content which can bind directly to the lining of the small intestine, inhibiting the absorption of nutrients and potentially causing lesions on the intestine and leaky gut. Nightshades can be more problematic for those with autoimmune disease.

Try substituting nightshades with other healthy vegetables. For example: choose sweet potatoes over white potatoes, apples, grapefruit, and beets over tomatoes, portobello or shiitake mushrooms over eggplant and notice how your body responds to the change.
